We’re celebrating International Jazz Day in style in 2025 with 3 amazing local Brisbane bands! This concert is a fundraiser for the Brisbane International Jazz Festival, with all proceeds going towards artist fees for the festival in October.
This concert will take us through the history of jazz music, from early jazz in New Orleans through to hard-bop/soul jazz in the 60s and beyond!
Brunswick Street Parade
Brunswick Street Parade enjoys bringing the pop music from 20’s and 30’s to life in an authentic New Orleans tradition. This 7 piece band performs infectious music of yesteryear with great enthusiasm. The band performs regularly at the Bearded Lady in West End but has also performed at the Brisbane Festival and Queensland Music Festival.
Cannon Fodder
A multi-instrumentalist, Cannonball Adderley is best-known for his work on alto saxophone and for his recordings with Miles Davis and with his own small groups.
His group, the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, was one of the biggest draw cards for any harp bop and soul movement. Adderley has over 30 albums to his credit and was a major influence in over several decades the jazz world.
“Cannon Fodder”, led by Brisbane saxophonist Bradley McCarthy, pays tribute to Cannonball Adderley by performing some of the classic repertoire from his Quintet in the 60s and 70s.
Jess Spina Quartet
The Jess Spina Quartet is a group of innovative musicians who have developed a special connection over years of playing together. Through a carefully-crafted mix of standards and complex arrangements, they guarantee something for every lover of Jazz and, above all else, a wonderful night of music.
Since her first performance at the Brisbane Jazz Club when she was 9, Jess has earned a reputation as one of the finest vocalists in Australia. At 21 years old, she placed 3rd in the prestigious National Jazz Awards held at the 2020 Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, and in 2019, she performed at the Siena International Jazz Festival in Italy. In 2022, Jess was nominated for the Freedman Fellowship Awards amongst the vanguard of Australian jazz musicians.
