Cannon Hill Anglican College’s musical department hosted the “Fundamentals of Jazz” workshop, presented by senior staff and students of JMI. This workshop provided the highschool students with an overview of jazz history, performance techniques, musical concepts, and the dynamic interplay between musicians that defines the art form of jazz.
JMI CEO Nick Quigley (Double Bass), Head of School Paula Girvan (Piano), Senior Lecturer Josh Hatcher (Woodwind), and second-year student Joe Rutledge (Drums) led the workshop. They blended theory with live performance, tracing jazz evolution from its New Orleans roots to complex bebop harmonies. Throughout the sessions, they illuminated the social, cultural, and musical factors that have shaped jazz’s development over the past century.
Students delved into improvisation techniques, gaining insights into the art of musical conversation through call-and-response and other collaborative approaches. Nick emphasised the crucial role of rhythm and groove in jazz performance, providing a historical perspective on the development of the drum kit, illustrating how technological innovations have shaped the sound and performance of jazz over time.
The Fundamentals of Jazz workshop format encourages active participation, allowing students to not just observe, but to experience firsthand the concepts being taught. From dissecting the intricate workings of a rhythm section to exploring the nuances of improvisation, participants were given the tools to deepen their understanding and enhance their own musical practice.
Throughout the workshop, emphasis was placed not just on technical proficiency, but on developing the listening skills, creativity, and expression that are hallmarks of great jazz musicians. By fostering an environment of curiosity and exploration, the workshop aimed to inspire students to continue their journey in music by exploring the world of jazz.
