Exploring Jazz When You’re Unsure of What to Listen to

Jazz is a labyrinth of different styles, eras, and instrumentation and deciding where to start can often become overwhelming. Whether you’re a seasoned Jazz musician or a newcomer who listens for enjoyment, here are five things to check out when you’re not sure what to listen to.

Emmet Cohen – “Live from Emmet’s Place”:

Pianist Emmet Cohen invites listeners into his jam space with “Live from Emmet’s Place,” a series of Jazz jams recorded from his own home. Cohen is always smiling when he plays and he brings joy to an already joyful genre, introducing us to a different special guest every week.

Hank Mobley – “Soul Station”:

For those eager to delve into the art of transcribing Jazz, Hank Mobley’s “Soul Station” is masterclass in groove and melody. Featuring Mobley on tenor saxophone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Blakey on drums, this iconic album is full of melodic solos and a swinging band.

Sonny Stitt Sits in with the Oscar Peterson Trio:

This is a collaboration between absolute heavyweights in the Jazz genre, Sonny Stitt and Oscar Peterson. For Jazz listeners who want to learn exceptionally crafted solos and understand swing, this album will point you in the right direction and you’ll have a great time singing, playing or dancing along.

Michelle Nicolle:

Renowned vocalist Michelle Nicolle has a deep understanding of Jazz and connection to the lyrics. With an impressive catalogue of repertoire – She takes requests for any Jazz songs at her Melbourne residency at the Brunswick Green which she has been doing since 2007 – Michelle will make you fall in love with the repertoire.

Lachlan McKenzie:

If you are looking to find some Australian Jazz, you might like to check out Lachlan McKenzie. An accomplished trumpeter and JMI alumni, Lachlan plays both Jazz standards and his own original music. Check out his 2018 album ‘Ruminations on a Theme’ here:
