JMI Jazz Orchestra on the left and the QYO Big Band on the right

Enjoy a night featuring TWO of Brisbane’s finest young big bands performing in the intimate space of JMI Live. This is a rare opportunity to listen to the best up and coming talent on Brisbane’s jazz scene in the big band format.

JMI Jazz Orchestra

The JMI Jazz Orchestra is an 18-piece big band made of up of students and staff from the Jazz Music Institute. Led by saxophonist and JMI senior lecturer Joshua Hatcher, the JMI Jazz Orchestra pays tribute to the incredible music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and other seminal composers and arrangers of big band music. Through performing the music of these legends gives the students a strong foundation of understanding the breadth of Big Band music. The JMI Jazz Orchestra performs regularly around Brisbane at various locations and community festivals including Big Band Blast and Brisbane Big Band Festival.

QYO Big Band

The QYO Big Band is part of the world-renowned Queensland Youth Orchestra (QYO) music program. We are a 20-piece ensemble consisting of some of Queensland’s most talented and emerging instrumental musicians performing music from a variety of big band jazz and swing genres. The members of the auditioned ensemble are students attending schools, universities and music conservatories aged between 16 and 23.

The Big Band performs at a variety of community, educational, corporate and commercial engagements as well as touring regionally within Queensland. We have played venues such as QPAC, Suncorp Stadium (for the NRL),  Brisbane City Hall, Queen Street Mall, Brisbane Jazz Club, Doo Bop Bar, Reef Casino (Cairns) and various jazz evenings & swing dancing events, where we have performed alongside notable artists such as James Morrison, Tom Burlinson and Darren Percival. The ensemble is led by accomplished Musical Director, Mr Bohdan Davison, a noted musician, music educator and saxophonist.
